Beast Mastery Hunter Talents
This section of the Beast Mastery Hunter guide provides an overview of all talents, information on which talents work well in different situations, and popular builds in Wowhead's talent calculator. This guide is written by

Pure Single Target Raiding
This build is focused purely on single target DPS.
has been greatly improved in patch 7.2 because it will now cause your pet to instantly charge the target if they're out of range (up to 25 yards). It's also acceptable to run
on any single target fight if you're not a fan of Dire Frenzy (it's only slightly behind).
Multiple Target Raiding
This build is recommended any time you'll be doing a mix of single target and AoE damage. You could safely use this on any raid encounter. For heavier AoE encounters such as Spellblade Aluriel, Skorpyron, Tichondrius, or normal/heroic High Botanist, you can also use
if you want.
This is a good all-around build for Mythic+ dungeons. It focuses primarily on AoE damage but can still do respectable single target DPS. Using
is also an option if your group is doing big trash pulls (and it's a Fortified affix week), but generally you give up far too much single target DPS for this to be a good option all the time.
Mantle of Command Legendary
If you have
legendary shoulders, this is a great build for single target damage. The more Critical Strike you have, the better this build will perform (30% crit or more is best). It's unfortunate that a build this fun is limited to a specific item, but

simply doesn't work well without the shoulders.
Recommended for new players. This build focuses on making the rotation as simple as possible. Its theoretical DPS is lower than other builds, but it may result in similar or more DPS in the hands of less advanced players. It is also a fine choice for leveling or world content. Make sure your pet is set to Ferocity spec for raiding and dungeons.
Tier 1 Talents

procs in that window. Works best in situations where there is a constant stream of fresh new targets to take advantage of it.

is the best choice for pure single target DPS because
will be responsible for a good chunk of your single target damage.
is the best multi-target option, and is also acceptable to use in single target -- if you're not sure what to use, then use this.

Tier 2 Talents
: If you're interested in turning your
s into genuine weapons, this is the talent for you. Whenever a newly spawned
reaches their target, they stomp the ground and deal significant AoE damage within 8 yards. It's even a great choice for single target DPS.
(changed in 7.2): Replaces your Dire Beast to make your main pet more powerful. It causes your main pet to deal similar damage that your
would have done, but does it all instantly with 5 quick attacks. In addition, it generates over twice as much Focus instantly (25 vs. 12). Lastly, it gives your pet a 30% (42% with
) attack speed buff for 8 seconds. The attack speed buff stacks if refreshed before it expires with a
proc. This is a great single target talent. In patch 7.2, Dire Frenzy now causes your pet to charge at the target when out of range (just like Kill Command). This change makes it a much more versatile talent since target switching will be more effective.
: A shot stolen from the clutches of Marksmanship Hunters that deals frost and nature damage to 1-2 targets, and generates 10 Focus per target hit. It costs nothing to cast, and its 9 second cooldown is further reduced by your Haste stat. A good talent for people who dislike any downtime in their rotation as it gives another button to press. It doesn't completely eliminate downtime, but it helps.
is the best overall talent because of its AoE damage potential, and the fact that it's also good in single target.
has the strongest pure single target DPS, and is generally fine to use in any situation with the patch 7.2 change.
lags behind the other choices in DPS.
Tier 3 Talents
: Gives you a 60% movement speed increase for 5 seconds whenever you
: When your abilities crit, there is a 15% chance that
's cooldown will be reset.
: Whenever you haven't attacked a target for 3 seconds, your movement speed is increased by 30%. The movement speed buff is removed when you attack.
is the best talent here and is recommended for most situations.
is too random to rely on.
is more of a quality of life talent to help you get around faster. It can be useful for world content, transmog runs in old raids, that sort of thing.
has no real use in a raiding environment.
Tier 4 Talents

an additional 30% chance to proc (for a total of 50%), but not all procs happen at opportune times which makes this talent unreliable. This talent is only worth using if you have
equipped since no procs will go to waste.
: Significantly buffs
damage. As you'll be spending around 40% of your time in
, this is a very strong talent.
: Increases your pet's Basic Attack (
) damage by 100% and allows them to teleport to their target once every 20 seconds. It is very strong in multi-target situations.
is the most versatile talent because it does well in every situation. Its single target damage is now competitive, it massively increases AoE damage, and it improves pet mobility.
is slightly better for pure single target DPS, and offers superior burst damage.

lags behind in DPS and is not recommended, but for Hunters with
it is a competitive (and highly recommended) choice for single target DPS.
Tier 5 Talents
: Beast Mastery's best overall Crowd Control ability. It requires the affected mobs to move slightly in order to trigger it.
: Incapacitates a single target for 30 seconds which breaks on damage.
: Unlike Binding Shot, this stun can be triggered on demand. It only affects one target, your pet must be in melee range of that target, and it even has a longer cooldown than the other talents.
In most cases
will be your best bet because an AoE stun is one of the most potent crowd controls out there, especially in something like a Mythic+ dungeon where trash packs can be quite dangerous. There will always be situations where you want to lock down one particular mob for an extended period, and for that you can use
, but it is a bit redundant now that
has returned to Beast Mastery.
Tier 6 Talents
: Sends crows to attack your target and deal substantial damage over 15 sec. Costs 30 Focus on a 1 min cooldown. If the target dies with Crows active, the cooldown is reset. This is the best choice for single target DPS or for situations with priority adds that die quickly and are likely to trigger the cooldown reset.
: Deals burst AoE damage to targets in a cone in front of you. The main challenge here is pooling up 60 Focus to use this every 20 seconds. Without any active Focus regen, you have to do some planning to achieve this and it can be more trouble than it's worth for single target DPS.
: This talent is a simple toggle. When it's active, all of your auto shots will spend 3 Focus and deal AoE damage around the target. This is pretty nice sustained AoE damage, but you have to sacrifice some single target damage. Check the
of this guide for a Weakaura that will remind you to toggle it on.
is the best overall option because of how much damage it deals to priority targets, and the cooldown reset potential. In 3+ target situations,
is recommended as long as the targets are clumped up (Mythic+ dungeons). If you need spread AoE damage, then
can be used, but it's not really worth using it in your single target rotation.
Tier 7 Talents
: Summons many pets from the wild to literally Stampede at your target. The tricky part is that the direction of the stampede will be the direction that your character is facing when you cast it. The beasts hit everything in their path up to 30 yards away, so to maximize this 3-minute cooldown you'll want to place as many targets between you and the primary target as possible (and hope that your tank doesn't move them out of the Stampede).
is buffed by
, so you should always use it during
: When Bestial Wrath is active, your
resets the cooldown of
. This results in high single target damage during
. Be sure to enter Bestial Wrath with a full Focus bar to fully take advantage.
: As long as your pet is in Ferocity spec, every
will do a little bit of extra bleed damage to the target. It's free extra damage without having to do anything. The bonus for Tenacity and Cunning pets are more focused around soloing and PvP, respectively.
is the best choice for for pure single target DPS and most raid encounters.
is recommended for situations that demand multi-target burst, such as high level Mythic+ dungeons with difficult trash pulls.
has the least DPS potential, but it also requires no real change in gameplay to get its benefits. It's just a constant source of extra DPS, which may be preferable to some. It's also a decent choice for raid encounters where you spend the majority of your time casting Multi-Shots instead of Cobra Shots (thus not benefiting from Killer Cobra as much).
