Creating Custom NonSet Transmogrifications
Don't forget to rate if you found this guide useful! -->
There are many beautiful and great looking tier sets or pre-designed set outfits that are in the game, which a lot of players return to when transmogging their characters' outfits. This leads to the same issue that has happened for a long time -- everyone starts looking the same. Blizzard has given us a powerful tool to alter our gears' appearance as well as thousands of pieces to choose from. So why limit yourself to get a pre-designed set?
Not saying that using tier sets or pre-designed sets is a bad thing. If you like, by all means use it!
If you are wanting to use a full tier set then this isn't the guide for you. You may want to check out one of WowHead's Guides:

There are a few things one might want to grab, which will make creating your customer non-set transmog easier. These are 100% optional, but will really help you with creating your transmogs.
This AddOn is a life saver when it comes to creating transmogs. It does several things, but some of the more useful ones I have found are:
Allows you to create and save sets
Shows you if you have said item
Shows you how to obtain said item
Shows you, if quest item, if you have completed the quest
Allows you to view the set on different race/gender combos
I use this all the time when designing my transmogs.
This is a Windows only program and requires being installed on your computer. I and many others use this for CG projects, but it is also good in helping pick out outfits. It being external to the game allows you to create transmogs without having to being in-game (or even have an active account). However, for transmogging it does have some drawbacks:
It's another software to install
By Default has some issues with running while also running WoW (there is a work around for this)
Graphics in the Viewer are slightly different looking than once in-game
No item information; mainly just name, item class, item ID
Windows only software
New/Boosted Player Guide: Transmog Basics, Tools, and Guides
, which may be fairly helpful for many people who are just starting out.
Not only does WowHead have
, but has a section dedicated to
This is a great place to help you find the best place to farm BOE world drops, or to figure out how to solo A, B or C bosses in lower raids to farm for that drop. You can also see if a set has all slots or just some. Also includes comments from other players, which many includes what weapons, capes, etc. they think goes well with specific sets or items.
Another nice thing is that with their transmog sets they show alternatives (if there is any) of the same colour and model of a piece. So if you did a quest 2 months ago that the reward was a pair of gloves you want. You can look it up and see if there are any other quests, drops, or crafts for ones that look the same.
Don't forget to check out the
is a site that allows to visually see items on your character or other race/gender. You can also save and have it voted on, or look through other submitted sets.
Pretty simple here. There are sites and blogs out there that are dedicated to showing off transmogs they created or was submitted by others. These are some good sources if you get stumped.
There are tons of blogs out there so just do a google search for "world of warcraft transmog", "transmog", "leather* transmog", etc.
*- change for whatever armor type you are looking for.
World of Warcraft forums
is another great place to get some ideas and help for your transmog.
There is usually always a "Rate the Mog" post in the general section.
There is a
now on the forums where you can go to get help, rate it, etc. about transmogs.
WowHead has added in a new
section for users to post their transmogs. Be aware however, that it will only show the last 248 transmogs added. This means you could be missing out on a lot of awwesome ones. Not to mention that people post incomplete, by mistake, or multiples, and don't go back in and delete them. So make sure you use the filters.

There are several ways to get an idea for your custom non-set transmog. I use any number of them depending on what I am doing the transmog for.
This is how I do a lot of my characters' transmogs, and is a good way to start. Pretty much you start by going through what you have. For example, you have a piece you absolutely love and want to use. Open MogIt and place it on your character. Build your transmog around that piece or pieces.
When I go to start a new transmog for my characters; my friends and I run several raids and dungeons to get a few "starting" pieces to work with or to choose from. I usually look for head or shoulder pieces first, but have created transmog sets from leg pieces as well.
Theme outfits are not just for RPing anymore. Most people play rogues for a reason... their stealthy, cover of darkness, lurking in the shadows "theme" they have, or that we believe they should have. The same goes for a lot of people's characters. We have created this persona of our characters. Who they are, what they like, how they think, and so on. Why not? We play them for hours on end. Why not extend that into how the are dressed?
You may want to build a theme off of something about your character. Things like:
- like Rogues been dark and shadowy
- or Tauren being tribal and earthy
- or Engineering being steampunk like
- or Starcaller having a celestial feel
- or Mekgineer's Chopper gives you a biker identity
Simply ask a friend or guild mate for some ideas on a transmog theme. I found this is a fun way of going about it, and makes you think outside your normal box.
I tend to use this method when making for friends and guild mates instead of a way for me to create a transmog set for myself. It's amazing some of the details in a request or suggestion you may get, and that you may never had thought about.
For example, had a friend request a transmog set for his warlock. Wanted something that wasn't a robe, flame themed, not using the mageweave or cindercloth pants, yet some what "skippy".
There are lots of transmogs currently out there one can get ideas from.
Blizzard spends time creating
outfits from all the NPCs
in the game. So if you see one you like screenshot it or look up the NPC on WowHead. Remember some pieces in an NPC transmog may not be available to the player population. Those cases give you an opportunity to make your own mix on the idea from the NPC.
Another good place to search out ideas; is when at a capital city. Stop and look around at other players' garbs. See if there is anything you like. If there is, catch their name and realm and look'em up in the Armory. If you don't like all the pieces, alter out those you don't with pieces you do.
As mentioned before, you can also use the WoW Official Forums or Mog Fan Sites. These are great sources to get ideas of what items are out there and what pieces look like.
So now that we have some ideas and a direction in which we want to go, we're going to want to start putting something together. Right now would be a good time to open up
if you have it. Trust me this will help you tons.
Use one of the ways above and find the piece or pieces you want to start. This is going to be the base for creating your transmog set.
For the sake of this guide, I am going to use the
Наплечье Лунного когтя
as my starting piece. This is a leather shoulder piece that has a druid-ish feel. This set theme is a druid star & moon theme. I am wanting to stay with browns/tans, yellows/golds, and blues.
I usually try to start with the shoulders (sometimes the helm) and work out from there. They are usually the largest (or most eye catching) for most sets.
Now we need to pick out chest and legs. These are the next largest pieces. I think of these as a backdrop for the transmog. It's usually good to find something in the two pieces that bring them together. Most of the time I use coloring to match them up, and is best if you are going to use a tabard. You can use the details on the items or if they are matching items (belonging to the same set).
For the guide, I am going to use legs and chest from the same set; the
. This gives us browns that goes nicely with the shoulders and a nice blue shade that is kind of celestial coloring. It looks good with yellow and brown, as well.
Time for the hands, feet, and waist (and wrist if they show). These pieces are easy to pull from non-set armor. Usually look for coloring, textures, details that work well with the rest. In many cases using these from the same set really helps pull everything together, and makes it the transmog feel more complete and that it was suppose to be together.
In the case of this guide I am going to be a bit lazy and just use the piece from the set the shoulders come from. I like the browns, cream/white, and yellow they have.
Some other examples of options:
Сапоги Ярости Бури
if a druid
Перчатки золотого защитника
Боевые рукавицы Ярости Бури
if a druid
Пояс Ярости Бури
if a druid
Рунический кожаный пояс
Пояс из гиеновой шкуры
This is where you can really make your transmog, and these things are often overlooked or a major after thought.
While doing the other steps, I always keep these slots in mind because they can really alter a look. For example, take a blah chest piece with good arm designs and color, and put a tabard that goes great with the transmog. There you have it. A new look for the chest.
In the example, you can see how the shirt added a different look to the
while the cloak bring the cream and green together in the transmog.
So when creating your transmog keep in mind the style of arms on the chest piece, the length of the legs on the pant piece,
types of tabards
out there, review what
shirts are available
The last part of your outfit set is the head and weapons. These just finish up the entire look. Although in some cases I do use the helm for my starting point, if that's the case then only worry about your weapons. Remember the helm is optional if you don't want to show it you can hide it. In some transmogs it works best to not have a helm showing.
For the guide, I decided to use the
, which is from another set. It goes with the theme and I like the simple graphic sparkle it has. You don't want the shoulders and head pieces animations to clash.
For the weapons, you want to really take your time, and think about how the weapons look with the gear. Make sure it adds to and doesn't distract. The weapon should not be the focal point, but something that helps pull the transmog together, and in some cases simple is good. For example, the
would look really good with this transmog. It's simple and easy to get staff, and sticks to the Solstice theme as well as have blue and yellow/gold in it.
Now that Garrisons offer weapon enchantment illusions with the level 2+ Enchanter's Study (that has a follow assigned) -- adding enchantment illusions to your weapons can really add that cherry on the cake.

Here are a few tips to think about when you are out creating your awesome transmog sets.
When creating a transmog for your character it is something for you and not other players. It is a way to express the persona of our character(s). To create more depth of your character. The only person who it needs to impress or work for is you.
Don't be afraid to scrap what you are working on and start over. With MogIt just save it and come back at a later date. You might go in a new direction with it. I have scraped so many sets I work on. Many I have returned to later and finished. Remember Blizzard is always adding more pieces to the game. So that perfect piece may just be released next patch.
Always come up with possible backups for pieces. More so for those hard to get items. Some may have another item that is identical to it from a quest, drop or tradeskill, but some do not. If you run into the issue of you cannot obtain that piece you are prepared with another. You can also still use your transmog before getting it if your backup is easier to obtain.
Here's the set I did for my druid and the backup pieces. From the backup pieces it creates an entirely new set, but still has a similar feel.
Who knows, you may like the backup piece better.
Consider creating a transmog set idea for your character while you are leveling them. That way you can collect the items as you level.
Also if you need to grind out rep for an item you can do so as well while leveling. Otherwise you may have to grind out rep once you are higher level, which can suck.
Also if you know what quest/world drop items you want/need you aren't likely to throw them away. This is bad if that quest item is the only one of the style and coloring or the world drop is a hard drop to get. Consider getting
if you do this.
I did this with my paladin's set. He was only about level 12 when I created it, but was able to set aside the
I needed as well as get Ironforge rep exalted.
Change it up! If you get bored with the transmog you have; create a new one. My hunter has gone through 5 or 6 sets to date, and her current one I am always swapping out pieces.
There's several reasons why you may change your set:
you got a new piece you want to use that doesn't go with the current
you reach a new max level
you change races
My rogue had one set when she maxed 85, but with the expansion and leveling her to 90 I created a new one for her.
Most of all have fun with it. This is another aspect of
. Pick pieces that will take you back to old stomping grounds of Azeroth or relive the good 'ol days of Outlands. Use it to break out of the normal every day grind. Enjoy creating and gathering your transmog.
Thank you for reading my guide. Hope something in my ramblings helps you in creating your own transmog.
This is the best way I found for creating transmogs for myself. If it doesn't work 100% for you don't give up. Just try something different.
