Blizzard Adding Mythic+ Scores to Patch 9.1 - Good or Bad?

Blizzard is implementing a core Raider.IO feature: Mythic+ Scores to Patch 9.1! This is massive news for the Mythic+ and dungeon community as Raider.io is very popular and the core feature of Raider.io is their scoring system to assist in forming groups. When things becomes popular across the community, it has been added as a core function of the game, similar to Gearscore and Item Level from Wrath of the Lich King.
What Does Adding Mythic+ Score Mean?
Inherent scores being added in game now creates another source of information to determine whether or not to invite players from LFG into your party. This also moves something that was primarily used via an addon into the native game. Now players will be able to see things such as item level, class, role, and M+ score, which makes deciding as to who to invite easier.
This is not without criticism though, as one of the main criticisms of M+ score is the fact that some players feel excluded due to their lack of score or elitism within the dungeon community. While this is partially true, this is typically aN LFG issue, where players are trying to make the most informed decisions whether or not to invite players to their group. This creates a dynamic of why would they invite a player of a worse spec, class, or lower M+ score, when there are seas of people who are more qualified and playing better specs. Overall the addition of M+ score natively into the game will be an information tool, where players are more informed as to who to invite to their groups.
Also, on top of the information gained, as it currently stands in Patch 9.0.5, there is no reason to push past
reward wise outside of Raider.io score. This creates a tangible gain and reason to push past the +15 keystone level, especially when combined with the upcoming
that were datamined for completing +20 keys. There is also potential that dungeons will also be more aggressively tuned with the higher end in mind, as M+ score opens up the infinite part of the infinitely scaling system. There is a very distinct imbalance between the dungeons and the affix sets which could be something that Blizzard more aggressively tackles with the M+ score being an important game element to dungeon running. We have already seen a significant amount of dungeon tuning this expansion, which if that continues would make dungeons more in line with one another.
Ultimately there still is a dilemma between the high end M+ community and the weekly 15 crowd. The higher end of the playerbase uses Raider.io score as a competition tool to compare themselves to other top groups and to be competitive, but the weekly 15 crowd uses the tool to weed out players and select the best players out of LFG. This is where a lot of animosity towards Raider.io score comes from, but ultimately it is a necessary tool to have for players.
Pros and Cons
There are a few pros and cons to this system being added natively in game by blizzard themselves.
No need for external site or updating addons for data.
Every player has an in game score that they can access directly.
Ability for this to turn into an actual reward structure for high key pushers.
Actual end game for M+ players outside of the MDI or Keystone Masters.
Gives players more information as to who to invite to their groups.
Pushes blizzard to balance affix sets between one another IE:
LFG will further expect players to be overqualified for lower level keys.
Another qualifying metric on top of item level & class for players to not get invited over.
Speculation on the System
There have been datamining of
strings related to the new Mythic+ scoring system
. This seems to imply that there will be a fully functional page to see your score from all the dungeons combined, show you what your score is for that particular dungeon, and show you how your score is calculated per dungeon. This pushes the score to be an active element in the game that you are introduced to frequently such as rating in arena with win / loss screens at the end of arena games. The feature I am the most excited for is the ability to be able to see how much score you get after the dungeon is completed and immediately see that reflected in your M+ score.
As for improvements that Blizzard could take, there is certainly room for Blizzard to figure out a way to make scores not only from "push weeks" but be able to normalize them somewhat. This is a delicate balance as you do not want players to feel forced to "push" every week of M+, but at the same time currently players are pretty disincentivized to push on bad weeks.
While the score itself is nice, there are some features that would be incredible to have in tandem with the score. Most of these things that are on my wish list have to do with prestigious rewards. In the current game there is no reason to push past a +15 in Patch 9.0.5, but there are some things that would be cool to see added with M+ score that incentivizes pushing past a +15.
In Game Leaderboard
Challenge Modes in Mists of Panderia and Warlords of Draenor had leaderboards for the top runs on your realm and region. This is something that would be pretty cool to see return just as a recognition of the time and commitment that was put in. Being able to see the top runs on your realm, in your region, in the world, is a super neat thing and would be a great use of the currently lacking in game M+ tab.
In the current game, M+ lacks a lot of prestigious cosmetic rewards that PVP and Raid both have. A +15 in the grand scheme of things is not overly difficult once you are decked out in full 226 item level gear. On top of this, players want to be rewarded for being the best of the best and having titles, mounts, or transmog that are permanent and part of being in an exclusive club would be nice. Just as reference Rank 1 titles for Arena 3's is all players in the top .1% for that region and for that faction. This would also be a great incentivization for the higher end community to be more competitive in M+ and rewards players for being at the top of their craft. Currently the only end game for high end M+ players is the MDI and that is significantly different from the live key push style that we see in droves.
However, we have seen some new +20 achievements in the most recent PTR build that award
Overall, the addition of M+ score into the native game is incredibly good for the player base at large. On top of that it opens up the opportunities to create a real end game solution and end game goals for M+ players. I am very excited to see what more they do beyond adding M+ score and I do not suspect this will be the only announcement in regards to M+ score.
