Blizzard's Class Tuning Problems - Dratnos and Tettles Discuss
03.07.2022 в 22:47
Class balance has been a hot topic that's recently catapulted into the foreground off of the back of a series of decisions, tuning, and delayed tuning from Blizzard. In this week's GG WoW video, Dratnos & Tettles take a look at how we got to this point and analyze the reactions to the announced tuning, which you can read more about

There's widespread agreement among even those whose dissenting opinions are quoted in the above article that more frequent tuning that targeted specs like Destruction Warlock would have been good earlier in the season, though there are a few factors such as the upcoming MDI and scores that have already been set with Destro Locks that might mean teams would be unable to surpass those results with the spec nerfed and therefore effectively ending the season for those teams and players. Dratnos and Tettles go over some of these lines of reasoning and discuss which arguments they find the strongest, and then dive into a deeper discussion of the different philosophies that could be used to inform tuning decisions.
Some of the proposed goals for tuning that are either popular within the community or potentially used by Blizzard are:
Specs are so close that the meta is meaningless
", or, as Dratnos puts it, tuning that is good enough that it validates the popular belief that you should bring players based on their skill and gear rather than seeking out specific specs as mandatory. Dratnos believes that this mark was missed this season for Mythic Plus in particular, but it's a good one to aim for.
I can clear the raid with any comp
" is another phrase that conveys a similar degree of tight tuning that, in raid in particular, was much closer to the mark this season than Mythic Plus.
I have a compelling reason to bring any spec to raid / M+
" is the philosophy that Tettles believes Blizzard currently relies on, seeing class buffs or specific utility as satisfying that condition and therefore not requiring as tight numerical tuning. Dratnos sees this as a bad guiding philosophy because it leads to the futile attempt to balance numbers specs against utility specs rather than trying to have numbers within a fairly small range and some utility for everyone.
And then finally, "
The top to bottom gap is small enough where I don't feel like a burden playing any spec
," and its corollaries "The best spec isn't so far ahead it is mandatory" and "The worst spec isn't so far behind it is dead," which is an important goal for players so that those who do not enjoy re-rolling for power level never feel bad about that.
What do you think the guiding philosophy should be for class balance? Is tuning too infrequent or is it fine at this pace? Should the Destro nerfs have gone through now? Let us know in the comments!
