Talents and Skills
While every class has 6 skill types and a unique talent tree, the size of that tree and amount of skill choices per type and number of talents in that tree differ between classes, with this asymmetry allowing each class to feel a little more distinct compared to the much more formulaic options available in
Diablo III
. The skills are correspond to the 6 skills slots seen in game, though like
Diablo III
, you have the option of using multiple skills from the same type, rather than being restricted to one of each. Unlike previous games, skills in
Diablo IV
also have ranks similar to talents, with more points invested into a particular skill increasing the value of its damage or potency.
The talent trees are rather linear, though consist of multiple branches, and it appears you will have far more talents than talent points. Like most skill tress, each tier (diamond) unlocks one or more talents, with more points advancing the tree toward the next tier; so a Barbarian could spend 5 points in
Endurance
before moving further down toward
Concussion
, or also spend 5 points in
Martial Vigor
and skip straight to
Master of Arms
, meanwhile the bottom of the tree presents a mutually exclusive 1 point talent choice: that same Barbarian must choose between taking
Walking Arsenal
or
Unbridled Rage
, increasing the Fury cost of skills alongside their damage, for bigger but more spaced out strikes. The current cap of level 40 offers 31 talent points, while the Barbarian's talent tree consists of 102 possible talent allocations, so you'll have to choose wisely!
Legendary items can further modify skills to create custom playstyles. In the demo we've seen a legendary which removes the cooldown on Teleport but causes it to take you to a random location, combined with another legendary which causes Teleport to unleash an AoE shock nova, for a chaotic AoE explosion playstyle.
Barbarian
Like its
Diablo III
counterpart, Barbarians use Fury to power their attacks, but unlike previous iterations, this master of melee weaponry is unique in that it can equip four weapons at a time using what's referred to as the
Arsenal System
. Not only does this give more overall gear affixes, but switching between two one-handed weapons and two two-handed weapons freely. The Barbarian skills also tap into this concept, as most skills require a different type of weapon, and will automatically swap to it when used if need be. This creates a strong class fantasy of a raging berserker, fluidly and continually swapping between different weapons and attack, rather than spamming the same overhead slam over and over again. The Barbarian's talents further tap into this fantasy, as several talents improve specific weapon types, such as
Walking Arsenal
, which increases damage when swapping between weapon types.
Sorceress
The Sorceress is much more similar to previous iterations of the class; a master elemental magic, they specialize in Fire, Cold, and Lightning damage, which can impart different effects based on their element. Lightning damage tends to bounce or spread between targets in an AoE, while Fire damage inflicts burning damage over time, and Cold damage can slow or freeze enemies in place, causing them to shattering completely on death. Many of the Sorceress' skills follow that of the previous games, with fan favorites such as
Teleport
,
Frozen Orb
, and
Hydra
making a comeback.
As befitting their wide range of elemental magic spells, the Sorceress also has the largest talent tree, but doesn't gain any extra talent points to go along with it; the first few talents are general, but the tree quickly branches into each individual element, encouraging a Sorceress to specialize further into one or perhaps two elements than other classes, increasing their ability to inflict negative ailments and enhancing their damage with those specific damage types.
Druid
The Druid hasn't been seen since
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
, but has lost none of its ferocity. This shapeshifter seamlessly combines the abilities of their werewolf and bear forms alongside human magic to attack from melee as well as range, and can even call upon animal companions to join them in the fight - two wolves, a flock of ravens (technically called an
unkindness
or
conspiracy
of Ravens, which sounds even cooler), or poisonous strangling vines can join you in battle.
Like the Barbarian's talents, the Druid's tree is split into two branches - one focused on close range melee combat with an emphasis on werewolf and bear forms, while the other revolves around the Earth and Storm Spirit magic used in human form, though some synergy exists between them, such as one of the final shapeshifting talent
Storm and Claw
, which increases damage while Spirit skills are active. While the Sorceress also has a focus on controlling enemies with slows, the Druid has many abilities which immobile or otherwise crowd control enemies, likely to help them disengage from melee combat and utilize their full arsenal of magic before jumping back into the fray.
Of course, keep in mind that this is a very early look at
Diablo IV
, and much is subject to change before we get our hands on it outside of BlizzCon. We also don't have any information on what the other two as of yet unveiled player classes could be, although Assassin, Paladin, Amazon, Demon Hunter, Necromancer, Monk, or Witch Doctor are are all possibilities. Let us know what you think about the customization seen so far, and which classes you think will come to the shattered world of Sanctuary next in the comments below.
