We finally get some answers as to Sylvanas' motivations in the new Shadowlands cinematic No More Lies, which plays after the initial round of max-level Torghast quests. Here, Sylvanas explains to Anduin her reasons for joining the Jailer's ranks.
When we last saw Anduin, he heroically called down the Light to help us escape the Maw, but he remained behind entrapped in the custody of the Jailer. While Anduin believed the Jailer failed by letting us escape, the Jailer was pleased to see hw powerful Anduin was wielding the Light.
This story continues in the newest cinematic, where Sylvanas offers Anduin a bargain to willingly serve the Jailer as he would be a formidable weapon for their side. Anduin, as expected, refuses and demands some answers from Sylvanas. In a moment of apparent honesty (although one never knows with Sylvanas), she tells Anduin that nothing is fair and she wants to break this predetermined cycle, expressing bitterness at both her chosen path in life as well as the Arbiter choosing paths for everyone in death.
Sylvanas has certainly had an unfair existence, turned into a banshee against her will, then sentenced to the Maw after her death in Icecrown, so it's understandable why she wants to tear the entire system down. She believes she is fighting for a true chance at free will, although as Anduin points out, looking around at his dismal prison, it's a bit dubious if the Jailer has good intentions. So far the plan has entailed the destruction of Teldrassil, a bloody faction war, and the capture and torture of Azeroth's faction leaders--so even if the plan is ultimately noble, it's built on a flawed foundation. Even after her explanation, it's unclear exactly
how
the Jailer would create a better system for all--especially with the speculation he's
orchestrated many cosmic wars
with the help of the Nathrezim.
In this cinematic, the concept of justice is discussed as well, echoing the emphasis on
justice and vengeance in Afterlives: Bastion
. This cinematic started with Devos seeking justice for Uther's unfair death and ended with Uther tossing Arthas into the Maw out of vengeance. Good intentions can turn out poorly, and it's understandable that another one of Arthas' victims would be similarly fueled by rage stemming from the unfairness of their fate.
So what do you think of Sylvanas' motivations? Do they make her past actions more understandable? Is she in the right for wanting a truer chance at Free Will, or is she being used by the Jailer, whom Blizzard
explicitly stated was a main villain
of the expansion? Or will Sylvanas turn on the Jailer, once she has enough power and no longer needs the Jailer for her goals?
Sylvanas: I do hope you've settled in. The accommodations are a bit...sparse, I know.
Anduin: Where are the others? Are they safe?
Sylvanas: Safe? No, I wouldn't say any of them are...safe.
Anduin: I am so tired of your games.
Sylvanas: As you wish.
Sylvanas: No more secrets. No more lies. You are a weapon we will use to achieve our ends.
Anduin: I will not become an instrument of death.
Sylvanas: So you favor...life, is that it? That momentary flicker. Every cruel second spent delaying the inevitable in an endless war that you, like every Wrynn before you, will not survive.
Sylvanas: You know the truth. Nothing is fair. Not life, not death.
Sylvanas: So we're going to tear it all down.
Anduin: And what purpose will that serve? Everyone suffers, Sylvanas. But destroying everything will not take away the pain.
Sylvanas: Ah, you misunderstand. We're breaking a system that has always been flawed, and remaking it into one that is just.
Anduin: Do you expect me to believe that, after all this time, you've been fighting for justice?
Sylvanas: How can I convince you? From our first breath to our last, every decision is made for us. Then the afterlife decides what eternity we must endure. We can't even choose who we... We couldn't control anything. But through the Jailer, control of our fate will at last be possible.
Anduin: Look around you! At what, and who you've joined. What makes you believe you're not just a weapon to achieve his ends?
Sylvanas: You have a choice to consider. Join us willingly...or be made to serve.
Anduin: I thought you believed in free will, Sylvanas.
Sylvanas: We've never had free will, Little Lion. But that...is about to change.
