WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Hello! Welcome to the 145th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
My name is
and I am a content creator focusing on making gold using Professions and
. I have a number of guides over on
and I also stream my adventures on
Shadowlands Delay & Gold Making Implications
The WoW Community received some major news this week regarding the
delay of Shadowlands
. Far more pertinent to gold makers is the announcement of the date for Pre-Patch being
. This means we have scant few days to gather enough gold for the
before it heads to the Black Market Auction House. If you are one of those on the final run, I wish you luck!
A lot of raw gold farms will be changing when pre-patch hits, so this date gives us concrete goals to aim for up to that date. It also gives us a potentially longer pre-patch in order to make gold and get ready for Shadowlands. The response from the gold making community has been largely positive ...
This works for me. I rerolled on a new server so this gives me time to make sure my primary alts are levelled and have some relevant old-world recipes on hand. Glyphs, weapon glows, that sort of thing.
Wooo two more weeks of raw gold farm before it gets nerfed.
gold making related tips on what to do before Shadowlands
If you want to make a lot of gold in SL prepare to get to work. Some of these tips are less impactful than others but maybe some of you will find them useful. These are only related to gold making not general stuff to do like getting achievements that are going away. That's just basically condensed info of what I'm doing and what I read people do on this sub.
1. Level alts
That depends on how much time do you want to devote to making gold but having alts and at least every profession covered is very, very helpful. Not only it allows for more variety it also saves you a lot of gold because you can craft yourself items or reagents in one profession that can be used in other professions. Having the option to do gathering at the start of the expansion is really powerful too. Prepatch is also the best time to level army of alts for stuff like Sky Golem or Alchemy cooldowns.
2. Max out old professions and get rare recipes
Plenty of reasons to do this, starting from relics of the past to just having more variety. Some old enchants are still in demand, crafted xmog is a good market too. Crafted mounts sell all year long. Glyphs might see rise in demand in SL. This is the time to farm that Vial of the Sands recipe because you don't want to waste time on this when SL hits because you will be too busy. Also get reps for recipes because typically that's the longest time gating you will encounter here. Take advantage of the rep buff to get any BFA and Legion reps you are missing.
3. Set up your garrisons
This is a great source of more or less passive gold that you can do all year and its reliable. I recommend Drizzled Rose's guide for more details. The more alts you have the better it gets althogh you obviously have to spend more time managing it. The classic combo of Inscription building + Alchemy building allows you to get raw gold as long as you can buy cheap herbs (using the Herb Garden is not very efficient).
4. Build a speed set for farming old content
This could take a while to get done so do it now. But take into consideration that Legion legendaries are getting hit by the nerf hammer in SL.
5. Set up a guild bank or two if you constantly run out of space
Having more inventory allows you to store items that you will sell/use in the future and do more flipping. I cant imagine functioning now without the guild bank. Even if it takes you a while to find people to sign your charter this is so worth it.
6. Learn how to use TSM
If you are not already using TSM you are doing yourself disservice. It is maybe not needed if you only post a small number of items but it makes your life a lot easier. There are great guides out there for beginners and a 10 minute set up article on this sub. With TSM 4.10 making groups is really easy too.
**7. Look for new addons **
Some of which I can recommend are:
Sushi sort - sorts your guildbank
Bagnon - combines all your bags into one bag (doesnt work with Sushi sort)
All the Things - shows sources of items and all the other items with the same appearence
Executive Asisstant - excellent tool to keep track of daily/weekly tasks if you have a lot of alts
AutoSellMyJunk - automatically sells all your grey items and repairs your armor when you open the vendor window
Azeroth Auto Pilot - very good to optimize leveling alts as it shows you the routes and which quests to pick up
Garrison Mission Manager - now sending troops on missions takes you seconds and you can upgrade their gear (WoD mission table) very easy too, also works on Legion and BFA mission table
WorthIT - extemely good addon for all the farmers out there, shows average gph on a lot of ore/cloth/herb farms and allows you to pick farms that are actually worth your time
8. Use your old currencies
From BFA we have benthic pearls that you can use to buy benthic gear and sell it in prepatch for 75g. Sure its not gonna make you millions but its better than nothing. Or try your luck at reselling the pets. There are also Seafarer's Dubloons that you get from IE and 7th Legion Service Medals. Titan Residuum you can also exchange for 445 gear tokens and sell those in prepatch.
9. Read beta reports from SL
Getting to know how professions are gonna look like in SL is the best way to getting ready. There are also several youtubers that cover this content.
10. Try out new things and have fun!
If you only do one method of gold making maybe give other ones a try. Who knows maybe you'll discover something you'll really like!
11. Clear out your banks and bags from junk
I am guilty of this, I am hoarder. But Im in the process of getting rid of stuff that I dont need so I have space for all the SL materials.
12. Make Expulsom
That only applies if you have a profession that will have something relevant to sell in SL using Expulsom. Im stocking my Engineer and Blacksmither with Expulsom because I plan to sell ATV in SL and both of the parts use Expulsom to make.
13. Invest in mount equipment mats
Well that's just the speculation but they could sell really well in SL because new and returning players will want those and bfa mats are at its cheapest right now.
14. Buy Vial of the Sands vendor materials while the rep discount is up
If you are revered with Uldum Accord you recieve a 20% discount on vendor mats but that goes away in prepatch. If you are not revered yet you still have time because rep bonus also applies to 8.3 reps.
Edit: This is not actually confirmed just something I heard.
Overall, there is going to be a large shift in gold making methods come pre-patch and we will have more time to explore them in the transition time before the expansion hits. Watch this space for more news and opportunities are we discover them!
Shadowlands Professions Levelling Guides
has shared an updated overview on
Shadowlands Profession Guides
, this time focusing on what it takes to level each profession ..
A few weeks back I posted some quick overviews for each of the professions, which were very well received. Frankly I was surprised just how many people of this subreddit left positive comments on the videos. So Thank you!
I return today to offer one better!
EVERY Shadowlands Professions leveled up to max. Oh boy was that a lot of material farming.
If you have chosen your professions going into Shadowlands I hope these will be helpful to give you an idea of the material requirements, stumbling points and goldmaking possibilities along the way.
Choose your Profession here -
Due to the rules of the subreddit I will give a short written overview for each profession here also.
- Its going to take a LOT of Herbs to level! Somewhere in the region of 7-800 Deathblossom and 30-40 Nightshade to get to skill 80 (unlock Darkmoon cards). "Zone Specific" herbs can be used in place of Deathblossom if cheaper as milling rates appear to be similar to Deathblossom.
- Still laughably broken on Beta. Leveled it up main just for the sake of completion. Requires only Laestrite Ore and Porus Stone to level. I believe I used over 1000 Porus Stone, but fear not this should be very cheap even at the start of the expansion due to basically no other profession using it in bulk.
- Most of the leveling of the profession is spent on creating "Ground" herbs. These are used once maxed on your daily Transmute CD of Shadestone. A variety of all the herbs are going to be required to level to max. This could vary wildly in price on different servers so I would HIGHLY recommend pairing this with Herbalism for a smoother leveling experience. 175 Skill looks daunting, but it's actually not much more effort or cost than the other professions.
- Uses WAY more fish than I would like. Nearly every craft we have to make will use at least some fish. Rod's at the ready! Some smart planning along the leveling will allow you to already have some of the base items needed when you get to the Feasts at the end of the path. The best Feast is locked behind Revered with Court of Harvesters. Boo
- Large chunks of the leveling is simply Prospecting. Prospecting Laestrite Ore should be your "go to" option. Avoid prospecting all your ore those as many crafts require the base ores as well as the gems.
- The materials needed to craft don't always add up to the amount of skill points gained by crafting so watch out. But past crafting a few leveling greens you can finish off by crafting Shadowghast Ingots in bulk, which you will use later on to craft Base Legos anyway so WinWin.
- Felt almost free in comparison to the rest. A stack of Shrouded Cloth (which can easily be farmed for in about 15mins) is basically all that is needed! SUPER cheap! Heavy Bandages ftw.
- No longer the super expensive leveler it once was. 70-90 skill is even basically free. Dust Shards and Crystals can all be crafted into each other so you can simply buy which ever is cheapest and convert to the others when needed.
- A few changes have been made since I first leveled this. I repeatedly stated that Heavy Desolate Hide is SUPER rare (which is now called Heavy Calous Hide). This is less true as skinning has had its drops increased, but like Blacksmithing, try to be smart with your materials.
Should you have any questions on any of the professions please ask, either on this thread or on the videos in the comments.
Thankyou Manthieus for sharing your thoughts, keep a close eye on his

New 30 and 32 Slot Bags
Another major gold making method is the selling of Tailoring bags in all shapes and sizes. We have been waiting for the introduction of new bags and this week saw the introduction of
new 30 and 32 slot bags for Shadowlands
The 30 slot
Shrouded Cloth Bag
will be competing with
Deep Sea Bags
. The 32 slot
Lightless Silk Pouch
will be competing with
Embroidered Deep Sea Bags
The mats of the new bags are relatively easy to acquire compared to some of the older bags, so prices are going to be interesting. Bags are always a good seller when more people return to the game or make more alts. We are going to see plenty of sales during pre-patch. Once Shadowlands arrives, the old bags are likely to continue to sell no matter the price. Hexweave bags still sell now despite the cheaper Deep Sea Bags being available.
For the rest of the players, they'll buy whichever is cheaper. For other unique players, they still buy hexweave bags because they look different, easy to remember the icons. Some want different icons for different equipments. i only see this price to go up initially to match the price of this bag
With a longer pre-patch and more players returning and the new levelling system will give us plenty of opportunity to sell the existing bags in the meantime.
Interview with BilisOnyxia
has been doing some interviews and guides for his website
The Gold Dipper
. Recently, he interviewed gold making legend
and shared the interview on both the
and his site. Here is a small snippet of some of the interview..
When did you start gold making and what made you do it?
I’ve always been interested in the economy side of things. Back in Classic I used to bid on auctions that were about to expire just before the servers went down for the weekly maintenance. Back then, auctions weren’t paused during the maintenance, so you’d automatically win any short or medium duration auction if you were the highest bidder when the servers went down. But I think I started to focus more on gold making than other aspects of the game at some point during Wrath of the Lich King.
That’s an excellent idea. How did you come up with the idea to bid before server shutdowns?
I can’t quite remember what exactly sparked the idea – after all it has been 15 years. But I think I’ve always been trying to get some good deals on items by bidding on them. Chances are one day after the maintenance I noticed that I won more bids than usual and then I put one and one together. Back then – and this is also true for the current WoW Classic game – the default auction house UI sorted auctions based on the total bid price of the auction. By offering your auctions with a 1 copper bid, your auction will appear first when people search for the item, even if your buyout price is not the cheapest by a long shot. This system caused a lot of people to offer their auctions with a low bid to trick others into buying them. But it also invited people like me to take advantage of their low bid prices to get some great deals if they forgot to cancel their auctions in time.
You also make gold in Classic now?
I’ve not been very active in Classic lately, but I also make gold there, yes. I mostly just flip materials and commodities in convenient stack sizes. You might be surprised by how many people will pay a higher per unit price just to get the quantity they want. I quite miss this about Classic. In retail you cannot do this anymore. Last time I checked I was sitting on roughly 10,000g liquid in Classic.
Reading that, really starts me to miss the old auction house system again. How is the new auction house system treating you and would you make any changes?
The new auction house is starting to grow on me. It has its advantages and disadvantages. The main benefit of the new AH is that it is much easier to use and more powerful. It’s a big improvement for the majority of the player base who does not mainly focus on gold making and might not even have any AH addon at all. Some searches can be faster and it is much easier and faster to buy or sell large quantities of commodities. On the flip side, sniper does not work too well anymore and you cannot charge a premium for convenient stack sizes anymore. Cancels getting throttled is a bit annoying as well, but I understand why it had to be done. If there was one thing I could change, I’d revert the change that prevents us from “queuing” up actions. With the old AH you can run a post scan and then spam the Post button a hundred times in 1 second and then wait 100 seconds while your auctions get posted. With the new AH you need to wait for each action to be completed. So you click Post, wait, click Post, wait, etc. Overall it’s probably just as fast, but it’s annoying.
I get your point. Talking about current stuff, I saw you got last week your second bruto on the NA region. Congrats! What kind of gold making do you mainly do?
Thank you! It’s actually my first Reins of the Mighty Caravan Brutosaur on NA, but my third in total. I already had two on my EU accounts. In the past I’ve mostly been flipping commodities (materials and consumables) and transmog items, but somewhat recently over the past couple of months I’ve started to get back into crafting. I’m really enjoying the silly profit margins you can get on both old content commodities and crafted items. Selling something that only costs you a couple of gold to craft for thousands of gold is amazing! I also quite enjoy flipping battle pets across about 30 NA and 30 EU servers on separate accounts. This is also what actually allowed me to pay for the mount on NA – I moved a lot of my battle pets from dozens of realms all onto one single realm and posted them at a discount. Even though I technically lost some gold on these cheap pet sales, this allowed me to pool my gold on one realm to get the mount. So I consider this a success!
Can you give us a rough estimate of how much liquid gold you have in total?
Funnily enough, I genuinely don’t know. But it’s probably a lot less than people might think. If I had to make a guess I’d say it’s somewhere in the 20-30 million gold range in terms of liquid, spread across quite a few accounts and realms. A large amount of my gold I made over the years is invested in battle pets. I might have more than that on accounts that are long forgotten. I tend to have way too many active accounts, so monthly wow tokens eat up a good chunk of the gold I make – and buying thousands of hearthstone packs and Overwatch loot-boxes does not help with my liquid gold either.
I highly recommend heading over to
Jack's Website for the full interview
along with several others and guides for gold making.
Bosses to camp while working
posed an interesting question this week asking for places to park characters to wait for rare spawns..
I've been working from home lately just as many others and decided to afk camp a couple of mount rare spawns (Warbringers, Draenor rares). While doing that I came across quite some gold from Warbringers (mostly from Golden Lotus and trillium) that you get from the bags. However. I found the competition to be very annoying and I'm currently looking into finding a rare or two that I can camp during the day for a chance at a rare BoE item. I was curious to see if anyone had something to share in this aspect?
Today I got the Servant of Demidos, which seemed to sell for an OK chunk of gold.
There were a number of great suggestions...
are close to each other in Pandaria and spawn every hour or so, each has a chance to drop a pet
- T mogs
- T mog (Robe)
There are many spots like this where you can log in and check for rare spawns. Please share any you know of in the comments below..
