WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Hello! Welcome to the 180th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
My name is
and I am a content creator focusing on making gold using Professions and
. I have a number of guides over on
and I also stream my adventures on
Classic Burning Crusade is Here!
Well the wait is finally over and the Dark Portal has opened. What does that mean for gold making in Classic and what can players do to get the large amounts of gold needed for flying?
First off we have professions and there are
extensive guides over here on Wowhead
, so my recommendation its to start there.
If you would like an extensive, in-depth video on professions,
has a great guide going through every profession and what the potential gold making benefits are ...
For example, here is a list of good Enchants to look out for ...
Formula: Enchant Weapon - Major Spellpower
Formula: Enchant Boots - Boar's Speed
Formula: Enchant 2H Weapon - Major Agility
Formula: Enchant Weapon - Executioner
Formula: Enchant Weapon - Sunfire
Formula: Enchant Weapon - Mongoose
Formula: Enchant Weapon - Soulfrost
Formula: Enchant Weapon - Major Healing
has a great series of videos going through various gold making methods in Burning Crusade Classic such as this one going through Phase 1 investments..
An example of things to look out for are the various meats and other ingredients needed for Cooking which will be popular ...
Chunk o' Basilisk
It's an interesting time as all this has been done before, so we are coming into it with a lot more knowledge and that's gonig to affect the markets considerably.
Yes, I do not think, herbs, food, etc will sell well initially.
Personally, I'm not expecting consumables to drive the economy as strongly as they did in classic and the big push in the beginning is probably going to be to get crafted gear together.
At least, this is what I would do if I was carrying over a handful of gold from classic and want to make performance benchmarks at the beginning of TBC.
People will also intrinsically collect the consumable matts while leveling.
The problem is that the end game is known so the hardcore people will already have plans and if you are in t3 you are basically at 70 Blue gear so will power through everything farming important rep through dungeons.
It's the 2nd or 3rd wave where things should pick up as that's where alts and professions really will start to spend money.
Obviously if you have collecting profs then use them to level them up but I'd say the sweet point will be around a week after as people start to seriously get ready to raid.
For those enjoying Burning Crusade Classic, I hope this gives a few ideas and resources to get the gold you will need for flying and everything inbetween!
Tales from Being Banned
shared their experience about getting caught up in the recent bot ban waves and how the were able to eventually get it overturned ..
Hey everyone so I was recently (about 2 weeks ago) perm banned on all my accounts for “hacking & botting”. And short story for some it got overturned for a “false positive” and I was given game time back and free additional game time on top of that so we are all good 👍. But I want to talk a little about what happened bc honestly it looks really bad.
So I MB craft and AH post without any software or anything. So I use nothing that “should” trigger the warden system but mistakes happen. So I woke up about 2 weeks ago to a full perm ban on all my accounts for “hacking & botting”. And I had to make 5 different appeals to finally get someone to look at my account for real so here are the appeals , time frame and how they responded.
1st appeal: I made this within 24 hrs of the ban and I received an auto cut and paste response that the ban would be upheld. It took roughly 40hrs after made to get this response.
2nd appeal: I made this about 1 hours after they marked the 1st appeal “resolved”. And they responded with “ The first GM said you are botting so we will still uphold this decision”. This took only about 24 hrs to get this response.
3rd appeal: I made this within minutes of the 2nd appeal being marked “resolved” . This one took about 60 hours for a response and they said “ after a short investigation we can see you have been botting. So we will be upholding this decision. If you make another appeal it will probably go unread due to this decision being final” . So of course I kept going.
4th appeal: Now this one I am both shocked and mad about the response. So I made this again within minutes of the 3rd appeal being marked “resolved”. It took about 30 hours for a response and it said “ after a thorough investigation we have confirmed that you were participating in exploitative behavior. And we will be upholding your perm ban on the accounts. Just understand that any appeals made regarding this decision after this we will take further action against your BNET account”.
So I did the only logical thing and made a 5th risked it and requested a high up GM review it.
5th appeal: I made this about an hour after the 4th was marked resolved. And it took 20 minutes to get a response so of course since it was so fast I thought they had just simply banned my bnet. But no I got this “ Hi I’m a higher GM and will review your account and rest data logs from our hacking and botting department. It may take 3-5 days for me to respond through email but please hang in there while I escalate this”
So obviously I was super happy! But the crazy thing was less than 30 min after the first message I got an email from them saying this “ Hi again so after a very quick review I am able to confirm this was a false positive ban. And I will not need to escalate this at all. I have refunded you 14 days of game time account and I’m sorry for the mistake”.
So after all that it was a false positive ban....I got my accounts and game time back. But it should not be like this and it needs to change. How many people have done what I did and then stop when they threaten to ban your bnet ????? This is highly unprofessional and honestly worse than if they had simply just ignored me. I’m going to make further forum posts and even a video going over all this bc blizzard really needs to address this. But thanks for all the support from you all on this crazy ride!!
I'm glad they were able to eventually get the result overturned, it really does highlight the systems currently in place are in need of improvement and cutting costs in these departments is hurting the player base.
Continuing the theme of banning and bots,
noticed an interesting pattern of potential bot activity ...
I just sent the following to firstname.lastname@example.org but since it's come up here I thought people might find it of interest. I've omitted the log data/account names but it's pretty easy to reconstruct if you are interested.
I'll preface this with the comment that I know baiting auctions with low priced mats and sniping the people who are tricked is not against the ToS but the behavior I am seeing is clearly that strategy applied via an automated botting program and it's just offensive to my sense of fair play.
Summary of what is going on: There are bots sitting in Booty Bay on 14 servers (high/full pop) logged in 24 hours a day. They operate as the snipers, never move at all, and time out every 30 minutes and relogin within 7-8 seconds. There is also a second account for each server sitting in MOP shrine which logs in every 8-9 minutes and posts a collection of quantity 1 of several different shadowland mats. The sniper bot then buys any listing posted at or below that price leaving 2 items + the original listing. It's been going on now for literally months although mostly you will just see anecdotal reports of it.
I believe the reason it's 14 servers is there are 16 wow accounts over 2 battle.net accounts, 2 of which round robin the baiting accounts and the remaining 14 run the booty bay bots. I suspect the relisting is also botted but that's not totally clear - it is done by other characters in each guild which are also sitting in shrine.
Other circumstantial evidence I saw: guild <redacted>-Zul'jin has a bunch of leftover sub rogues which I assume were used for botting in the past but are now banned or retired but it's definitely symptomatic of past bad bot behavior. Also the booty bay bots all have their away message as eg " is Away:离开" which I guess is Chinese for "away" which tends to confirm it's all one overarching owner.
Here is a table of the accounts and guilds for each server (here cycle is the time gap between logins for the bait account measured over ~ 2 hours on 5/30/21, STDEV is the standard deviation of login time gap). I have looked at the rest of the servers as well but did not retain logs. Needless to say it had been extremely predictable over the time I have been watching though I think the botter has added servers in the past month and at one point was only doing round robin with 1 account.
The servers with these bots are Area-52, Bleeding Hollow, Dalaran, Hyjal, Illidan, Mal'Ganis, Proudmoore, Sargeras, Stormrage, Thrall, Tichondrius, Zul'jin, Barthilas, Jubei'thos.
the cycle times for the bait bots right now are 8m45s +/- 16s.
you can see the bait account by watching auctions of things like desolate leather, Elethium Ore, most herbs, etc for a bunch of deep undercuts in quantity 1. You can find the booty bay bot by flying down there or by listing 3 desolate leather at the discounted price and when 1 of the 3 is sniped cancel the other 2 and you will get the buyer name. Add them to your friends list and you will see how problematic the behavior is.
The accounts are mostly faceroll diacritical characters but you can cut and paste from the guild page or from the ah email to add them to your friends list.
UPDATE: Well, maybe they are being banned. The bait bots seem to all be gone and 8 of the 14 booty bay bots are gone. They are still present on Area-52, Bleeding Hollow, Hyjal, Mal'Ganis, Tichondrius, and Zul'jin.
Others have shared their experiences as well ...
Having also noted the same behaviours, my observations were as follows, although taken individually each of these points is not obvious evidence of bot activity, taken as a whole I think they form a pretty clear picture:
- The characters virtually all have unpronounceable names with lots of special characters in them - presumably to make reporting them that much more difficult.
- The fact that each of the characters listed below lists the same set of materials in stacks of one on 9 or more servers that I've checked.
- Based on my observations the characters post in 7 to 9 minute intervals without fail, at all times of the day - as an EU player playing on NA realms, they were on at all times of night, and throughout the day when I was playing.
- When I have managed to add these characters to friends, I have observed that they log on for around 30-60 seconds, check the mail, then post their items then immediately log out (I think they are using alternative accounts to buy items that are posted to match their low value single posts with TSM sniper or some other custom program).
- All of the posting characters that I've observed are low levels on the dominant faction - which I think is a likely indicator of gold selling activities in my opinion.
- Checking the guilds of some of these characters, they are full of low levels with random names and very few achievements.
- The exact same behaviors are evident on multiple servers.
For anyone else wanting to report these bots with their complex and frustratingly difficult to replicate names, here are the common random characters they use in their names, could save you a few mins in trying to hunt them out when reporting them when they almost inevitably resurface:

This serves as a great example as to how to identify and report suspicious activity and help in the battle to keep the game an enjoyable experience for all.
