You unlock these at renown level 12 and they replace Barter Bricks, a few things to note:

All things that previously awarded Barter Bricks will now award Barter Boulders instead (at the same amount).
You can only buy items from vendors with Barter Boulders now, also prices are reduced (only 85 for the mount).
You can convert any Barter Bricks you already have into Barter Boulders at Ponzo at a ratio of 3 to 1.
At renown level 20 you can buy Barter Boulder for 100 Dragon Isles Supplies each (account-wide).

Does anyone else get the feeling the weekly hidden limit also applies to boulders collected in Smelly Treasure Chests (Smelly Disturbed Dirt) = I found 5 Barter Boulder in a row and after that 0.

If you've just hit Renown 12 for this, you need to wait until Newsy comes to you to give you a quest. I had to relog for Newsy to pop up

Didn't realize my character would be locked out of getting bricks after unlocking boulders now I'll just permanently have 2 bricks in my bag. At least they're worth 10g? :(

It feels really bad to get punished for quickly grinding rep. 76 bricks, nearly able to buy the voucher, then renown 12 and surprise! Why have the voucher cost 80 bricks then?

Can be purchased at renown level 20 (account-wide), but requires renown level 12 for Ponzo to accept them (not account-wide). So if you hit renown 20 on one character, you still need to hit renown 12 on the character you're using to purchase items before you're able to.

Seems like they messed up the prices on some items after the conversion. The mount was 170 bricks, but now costs 85 of the new currency. Hoping they fix this.

After reaching lvl 20 with Loam Niffen I bought all items from Ponzo. Sadly I emptied my Dragon Isles Supplies. I wanted to buy but it needs 249 Barter Boulder which cost 24900 Dragon Isles Supplies. Something needs to get account bound.

This change is beneficial in the long run, but IT COMES WITH AN INITIAL LOSS!

When the quest is completed all trades in Loamm thet previously required Barter Bricks will now require Barter Boulders as currency instead.
Prices will be roughly cut in half in comparison, and you will acquire Barter Boulders in the same ways and amounts you prevously acquired Bricks (random drops from looting offerings, weekly quests...) meaning you will gather currency at the same speed as before, but with lower prices.
HOWEVER your old bricks will become pretty much useless unless exchanged for Boulders at a 3:1 ratio, which will be a considerable loss if you had many of them! If you are close to the number you need to make a purchase it might be better to wait before completing the quest and complete the purchase BEFORE you turn the quest in.

EXAMPLE: 1 voucher costs 80 Bricks (before completing quest) or 40 Boulders (after turning in the quest)
if you already have 75 Bricks you only need 5 more to purchase the voucher
if you complete the quest you will only be able to use the Bricks to buy 25 Boulders (3 Bricks to buy 1 Boulder): now you need 15 more Boulders to buy a voucher!
so it's better to get the 5 bricks you need, buy the voucher, then change to the Boulder currency

Unfortunately it's very likely that when you read this you'll have already crossed the bridge.

P.S.: any 1 or 2 Bricks you have as a leftover from changing them all into Boulders you can safely vendor, since you won't be able to acquire any more Bricks to make 3 and buy another Boulder. I suppose the very first Boulder you acquire by turning in the quest is meant to cover for this annoyance.

cool i'm 20 with the niffen , i can buy boulders on main and alts but since i'm not 12 on alts, even though i CAN buy boulders, i CANT trade them because literally i have no f**ing clue what they are

If you're here wondering why are people saying that you can convert Barter Bricks to Boulders at Ponzo but when you are there you cannot see the option.

Its because your renown is too low. At R12 you unlock Boulders and they supersede Bricks.

If you have alts with tons of DF resources and want to pickup items from Ponzo, if you have R11 or less then you are ^&*!outofluck. You can buy Boulders from the Harlowe Marl but you will forever be unable to use them until you research R12.

At R12 the transition to Boulders isn't automatic, you need to find or purchase at least one Boulder to initiate the quest popup from that tiny faction snail.

I came looking for a tallied list of how many boulders would be required if one wanted to get everything. Since no one did it, I did it myself:

Without including profession recipes:
599 for one tmog, three drake tmogs, four profession knowledge boosts, one pet & one mount.

Profession recipes are bought using Ponzo's Cream (10 boulders) & Glimmerogg Timeshare Vouchers (40 boulders). The breakdown is:
Alchemy: 50 boulders (one cream & one timeshare)
Blacksmithing: 50 (one cream & one timeshare)
Enchanting: 60 (two cream & one timeshare)
Engineering : 50 (one cream & one timeshare)
Inscription: 190 (two cream & four timeshare)
Jewelcrafting: 60 (two cream & one timeshare)
Leatherworking: 90 (one cream & two timeshare)
Tailoring: 80 (two timeshare)

There are a couple on-use food items and such as well.

Do you have the feeling that, somewhat, your boulders are ... disappearing ? I could swear on my Ashes of Al'ar that i crossed the 200 boulders mark last week, and I was happy to be almost done with it for the achievement.
BUT this morning after the reset, I check on my boulders, and I'm "back" at 169 (nice). I never sell nor trade them except for the dig map which cost 1 boulder. I have no idea where those boulders went, or even if I really crossed the 200 boulders mark.
Am i going crazy ? Is Blizzard gaslighting me with those boulders ? I am *this* close to throw the towel and buy the ~100 missing boulders with dragon supplies.

If anyone is wondering and having an ALT buying Barter Boulders for resources. You still need Renown 12 to trade them at Gonzo on the Character.

I like how the exchange rate is 3:1 Bricks to Boulders, yet the item value is adjusted to be 2:1 (what it cost in bricks vs what it costs in boulders). What type of scumbag comes up with a reputation reward that is actually detrimental and increases the grind/farm needed?

When in Zaralek, be sure to have a expedition shovel (or sturdy shovel from the auction house). Having them in your inventory makes smelly dirt piles visible, which contain pretty much guaranteed bricks/boulders super easy
