Instruments of Death - Item References and Flavor Text in Patch 9.2 Sepulcher of the First Ones

Following our review of unique items in Patch 9.2, we're taking a look at some of the item references and flavor text in the upcoming Sepulcher of the First Ones raid, to help unravel the story of Eternity's End and speculate on where our fateful showdown with the Jailer might lead.
Speculation and Story Spoilers Ahead!
Naturally, several items in the raid directly refer to the Jailer, Zovaal. It's no secret that the original arbiter of death has grand designs on Azeroth, which are well represented in the flavor text, although it's never been clear as to exactly why Azeroth has been
ordained for destruction
. We
previously learned
that Frostmourne, the Helm of Domination, and by extension the Lich King were created in order to extend the Jailer's reach to Azeroth - seeking some hidden secret of the First Ones. We can now presume that secret is Azeroth itself - the nascent world soul growing within the heart of the world, believed to be more powerful than Sargeras and a threat to even the Void Lords... though seemingly also key to the Jailer's plan to unravel the designs of the First Ones.
Beyond the Jailer, there are several other character references both new and old. The

most likely refers to Arthas, so there's not really any new information there, and we previously discussed the
Priest and Death Knight class rings obtained from Anduin

presents an interesting question. We know that
Rygelon is a Constellar
, who like
Алгалон Наблюдатель
before him, is something of a celestial watcher. But while Algalon was specifically commissioned by Aman'Thul to watch Azeroth for signs of Old God corruption, Rygelon's allegiances are not defined - the dungeon journal tells us that he was drawn to observe the events within unfolding within the Sepulcher, unspecific as to whether he was already watching the Shadowlands or simply roaming around, but
the ring's flavor text
tells a different story. It sounds as though Rygelon served another master, and considering that all the known titans are busy
entertaining Illidan and Sargeras
, there remains but one known player left on the cosmic stage - the Void Lords.
The masters of the Old Gods stand opposite the Titan Pantheon, and while they've largely remained in the background, we know they too have designs on the titan gestating within Azeroth. The fear of Void Lord corruption was so great, it led Sargeras to rebel against his fellow titans, forming the Burning Legion in a perverted attempt to save the universe through destruction - scouring the cosmos of nascent world souls to ensure the Void Lords could not infest them. Though while Sargeras' plan made a certain amount of twisted sense, we now know that the Dreadlords manipulated him to serve the Jailer's interests, setting the titan on a quest to destroy world souls with the intent of killing Azeroth specifically, albeit for an entirely different reason.
Though ultimately unsuccessful, the death of Argus created a new opportunity, and so the Jailer used Sylvanas to engineer his escape through the events of
Battle for Azeroth
and
Shadowlands
instead. There have been several in-game character theories as to what will happen if the Jailer succeeds in his plans, ranging from the literal unmaking of reality to a new ordering of cosmology unbound by the
balanced structure of opposing forces
envisioned by the First Ones, but whatever the case, it doesn't bode well for our world. While the world soul is unlikely to actually die, there have been hints that Zovaal may be partially successful in some way - not destroying the it outright, but inflicting enough damage to reshape the face of Azeroth or even awaken the dormant titan within, thereby giving players a narrative reason to once again focus on efforts at home and maintaining the eventual threat of Void corruption - because the Void Lords don't want to destroy Azeroth, they want to consume it.
Dealing with the Void Lords is an inevitability, and so in this way the Jailer's actions may serve as the impetus to finally bring them to the fore. Despite Warcraft's erratic storytelling, there's actually a fairly direct link between
Argus breaking the Arbiter
, Sargeras
wounding the world
, Sylvanas
orchestrating a great war
, the Jailer breaking free to
attack Azeroth directly
, which could then create an opening for the Void Lords to finally appear. Of course, this is just speculation, but we're certain to learn more once we get into Patch 9.2.
