Continuing our showcase of unique items from Patch 9.2's upcoming Sepulcher of the First Ones raid, we have two class specific rings obtained from the eighth boss, Anduin Wrynn. Available only to Priests and Death Knights, these unique pieces of jewelry represent the duality of the tortured King of Stormwind, torn between his past as a Priest and his current domination as a Death Knight of the Jailer. These themes are also well represented in his raid encounter, as Anduin uses several Priest-like abilities like
Маяк надежды
and
Порочная звезда
, alongside more traditional Death Knight attacks such as
Жнец душ
and
Беспощадность зимы
.
The two class rings obtained from Anduin represent his past training as a Priest of the Holy Light and current existence as a Death Knight dominated by Jailer.
The
Искаженная печать Риннов
represents Anduin's past training as a Priest of Holy Light. A nice touch of the flavor text indicates that the ring may have actually belonged to Anduin's father, Varian Wrynn, as it features a quote from the Lion of Stormwind - stated during the
Legion cinematic trailer
, shortly before his death on the Broken Shore.
The special effect,
Lion's Hope
, may seem a bit strange for someone playing Shadow, but would seem to work rather well for all specializations - increasing damage and healing with a greater chance to proc as the target loses health. There is some question of whether it will be subject to proccing on unintended targets, however, which could be problematic if a Shadow Priest inadvertently triggers it on an ally, or Holy/Discipline Priest triggers it on an enemy, and therefore loses the buff to their primary role. Interestingly, and unlike the other ring, this one isn't actually tagged as unique-equipped either, though that's probably unintended and subject to change before the patch goes live.
The
Искаженная печать Менетилов
represents Anduin's transition into a Death Knight under the Jailer's command, literally warping his noble soul into something sinister. Interestingly, the name
Menethil
doesn't refer to Anduin at all, but another famous Death Knight from Warcraft history - Prince Arthas Menethil of Lordaeron, also known as the Lich King. We previously speculated as to how
Arthas was the source of Anduin's domination
, and this was later realized during raid testing, which confirmed that the original Prince of Darkness makes an appearance as the
Remnant of a Fallen King
.
The Death Knight ring also features only a single secondary stat in exchange for the special effect,
Remnant's Despair
, which is a debuff that increases the effect of diseases and has a higher chance to proc against higher health targets. Also absent values, it's difficult to say how strong this will be, considering that some specializations value disease damage more than others, but it is certainly thematic. Ironically, although Anduin uses a number of familiar Death Knight abilities during his encounter, he doesn't actually apply any diseases.
These are currently the only two class-restricted items in Sepulcher of the First Ones, although it seems unlikely there will be a ring for every class, as they are specifically themed around Anduin. While this may seem unfair to those who play the "left out" classes, in the past it was quite common for legendaries and other special effect items to favor a handful of classes from tier to tier - such as Warriors, Rogues, and later Hunters having access to the only legendary weapons throughout The Burning Crusade. This began to change in
Mists of Pandaria
, with the advent of patch or expansion-long quest systems that made
legendaries available to all players
, instead of being limited to ultra rare raid drops for specific classes.
Although derisively referred to as "welfare legendaries" at the time, this system has proven to be immensely popular due to allowing far more players to engage with them, and has even extending those items into other activities beyond raw combat power - such as the Battle for Azeroth legendary cloak also playing an integral role in sanity resistance during Horrific Visions.
In addition to its combat stats, the legendary cloak was integral to surviving inside the Horrific Visions of Stormind and Orgrimmar during Patch 8.3.
Blizzard has since experimented with adding legendary drop back to the game in a variety of forms, from class-wide pools of Legion legendaries that could drop anywhere in the game, to special effect weapons only usable by a
handful of classes
, while the raid bosses
Argus
and
Sylvanas
have actually dropped unique legendary items.
Of course, these two rings are only epic quality, rather than actually legendaries, though there's not really a whole lot of difference in this case. Even implied level of power is a flexible guideline, as
Раэ'шаларе, Шепот Смерти
isn't that much better for Hunters than
Граница Ночи
is for Rogues, though how strong these rings will be over normally budgeted epic jewelry remains to be seen. Whatever the case, they are still unique class specific items, which have special effects not found elsewhere, and that simply makes them cool if nothing else.
